Bagsecg of Jylland

Bagsecg of Jylland (830-8 January 871) was the Danish Jarl of Jylland during the late 9th century AD. He was slain at the Battle of Ashdown in 871.

Biography[]

Bagsecg of Jylland was born in 830, the son of Halfdan Angantyrsson and Ingun, and he became the King of the Jarldom of Jylland. Bagsecg later married Aslaug Ivarsdottir, the daughter of King Ivar the Boneless of Sudreyjar and the granddaughter of the legendary Viking king Ragnarr Lodbrok. Bagsecg held court in Jelling and reigned as Jarl of Jylland in peace for several years as, due to his alliance with the sons of Lodbrok, he was safe from threat. In 867, when the sons of Lodbrok invaded England to avenge the execution of their father in 865, Bagsecg did not take part in the initial invasion, but he led a reinforcement army across the North Sea to the British Isles in 870. At the Battle of Ashdown, Bagsecg was one of the five Viking earls slain in battle with the West Saxons.
