Bagoas courtier

Bagoas (350 BC-) was a Persian courtier of Alexander the Great and one of his lovers.

Biography[]

Bagoas was born in 350 BC in the hills north of Susa, Persia. He served at Darius III's court and later at Alexander the Great's court, and he first met Alexander when he entered Babylon in 331 BC. Alexander fell in love with the young man, whom he offered his freedom; however, Bagoas said that his family had died long ago, so he volunteered to stay at the court. He followed Alexander on his conquests, winning a dancing contest after the Macedonian crossing of the Gedrosian Desert; the Macedonian troops, among whom Bagoas was very popular, successfully convinced their king to kiss Bagoas in front of them.
