The BMP-2 is a Russian infantry fighting vehicle that was introduced into service by the Soviet Union in 1980 as a replacement for the BMP-1. The BMP-2 was given more accuracy as a result of the BMP-1's poor performance during the 1973 Yom Kippur War while seeing service in the armies of Egypt and Syria, and smoke grenade launchers were also added to the BMP. BMPs were sent to Eastern Bloc nations during the Cold War, and they are in use in former USSR nations and in former Eastern Bloc countries. In 1985, 24,000 BMPs were in service in the USSR alone.
