The Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic was a constituent republic of the Soviet Union from 1920 to 1922 and from 1936 to 1991. The republic was established on 28 April 1920, and it was a part of the Transcaucasian SFSR along with the Armenian SSR and Georgian SSR from 1922 to 1936. By 1931, Azerbaijan supplied 60% of the USSR's oil and a large portion of its tea; in April 1940, while the USSR was still allies with Nazi Germany during World War II, the British Royal Air Force and the French Air Force considered bombing the oil fields. On 5 February 1991, the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan approved a presidential degree that renamed the country to the "Republic of Azerbaijan", and it became independent in October 1991. On 12 November 1995, the SSR was abolished with the adoption of a new constitution.
