The Avenue of Sphinxes is a 1.7-mile-long avenue connecting Karnak Temple with Luxor Temple in the Egyptian city of Luxor (formerly Waset, or Thebes). The Avenue of the Sphinxes was built from the New Kingdom era to the reign of Pharaoh Nectanebo I (380-362 BC), and it was 2,000 meters long and was lined with over 600 sphinxes by 1809. By 1893, however, the road was mostly buried and lay below the groundwater level, making its excavation a challenge. The avenue was rediscovered in 1949 and its statues gradually unearthed; the entire route of the walkway was rediscovered from 1984 to 2000. The avenue was opened to the public on 25 November 2021 after seven decades of restoration, and its reopening was a citywide spectacle attended by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
