Avenel is an unincorporated community located within Woodbridge Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey. The community was established in 1901, and it was named for the daughter of the village's founder, Captain Demarest. East Jersey State Prison is located near Avenel's border with Rahway. In 2010, Avenel had a population of 17,011 people.
