Anarchist flag

Autonomia Operaia was an Italian left-wing extraparliamentary movement that was active from 1973 to 1979. The movement gathered itself around the free radio movement and published several national newspapers and magazines, with its structure being decentralized. It was particularly strong in Rome, Milan, Padua, and Bologna, but, at its height in 1977, it was present in small towns and villages where not even the Italian Communist Party was present. In 1977, the movement occupied Bologna University and La Sapienza in Rome, and the Carabinieri suppressed the school occupations; even the PCI was opposed to the occupations, as it supported Eurocommunism and cooperation with Christian Democracy. Following Aldo Moro's assassination in 1978, the group faced severe repression by the government, and it disbanded in 1979.
