The Australian Labor Party is a social democratic political party in Australia, founded on 8 May 1901. The party descended from the labor movement of the 1890s, and it was founded on democratic socialist principles; however, it would modify its views during the 1920s by supporting a non-monopolistic private sector, the right to own private property, a party of opportunity and security for working people, and a party of active government. The Labor Party supported republicanism, believing that Australia should cease being a constitutional monarchy and a de jure part of the United Kingdom, in keeping with its socialist orientation. In 1906, when it formed its first minority government, Labor became the first socialist party to rule a country. The party opposed the Liberal Party of Australia, and they took turns leading the government and being in opposition. It succeeded in legalizing same-sex marriage in December 2017.

Labor has been the ruling party of Australia since May 2022 with Anthony Albanese as its Prime Minister, holding 76 of the 151 seats in the House of Representatives.
