Austin Lane Crothers

Austin Lane Crothers (17 May 1860-25 May 1912) was the Democratic Governor of Maryland from 8 January 1908 to 10 January 1912, succeeding Edwin Warfield and preceding Phillips Lee Goldsborough.

Biography[]

Austin Lane Crothers was born in Conowingo, Maryland in 1860, and he worked as a public school teacher and lawyer in Elkton before serving as State's Attorney for Cecil County from 1891 to 1895, in the State House from 1897 to 1900, in the State Senate from 1900 to 1902, and as Governor from 1908 to 1912. Crothers was both a reformer and a white supremacist, and he died in 1912.
