Aurelio of Asturias

Aurelio of Asturias (740-774) was King of Asturias from 768 to 774, succeeding Froila I of Asturias and preceding Silo of Asturias.

Biography[]

Aurelio of Asturias was born in 740 to Count Froila of Asturias de Santillana, the brother of King Alfonso I of Asturias. Aurelio was from the House of Cantabria, a noble family of Catholic Visigoths. In 768, Aurelio had his cousin Froila I of Asturias assassinated so that he could take over the Kingdom of Asturias. He was crowned in Sama, and Aurelio became the king of a surrounded Christian kingdom that was bordered by the Bay of Biscay to the north and west and the Umayyad Caliphate to the south and east.
