Aureliano Annino (1933-) was an Italian Christian Democracy politician who served as Prime Minister of Italy from 20 April 1992.
Biography[]
Aureliano Annino was born in Frosinone, Lazio, Italy in 1933, and he became involved in Roman Catholic youth organizations after World War II. Annino became active in the Christian Democracy party at a young age, and he went on to become a party leader and, later, a member of the Chamber of Deputies. He led his party into the 1992 general election on 6 April 1992, and it won with 24.87% of the vote and 13/54 seats; the Democratic Party of the Left placed in second with 17.08% and 9/54 seats, followed by the Italian Socialist Party with 11.69% and 6/54 seats, the Communist Refoundation Party with 11.21% and 6/54 seats, Lega Nord with 9.94% and 5/54 seats, the Italian Social Movement with 8.24% and 5/54 seats, the Italian Republican Party with 6.82% and 4/54 seats, the Italian Liberal Party with 6.72% and 4/54 seats, and the Federation of the Greens with 3.44% and 2/54 seats. Annino proceeded to form a centrist government with the support of all parties but the Democratic Party of the Left and the Italian Republican Party, who backed the PDS leader Luciano Sgro's bid; Annino was voted into power by 37 deputies, while Sgro only won the support of 16 deputies.
