Aurel Aldea

Aurel Aldea (18 March 1887-17 October 1949) was a general of Romania during World War II who commanded the Bucuresti HQ.

Biography[]

Aurel Aldea was born on 18 March 1887 in Slatina, Romania, and he served in the artillery during the Second Balkan War and World War I. In the Interwar Years, he served in the general staff of the Romanian Army, and he was appointed Minister of the Interior under Prime Minister Ion Gigurtu. Aldea investigated Iron Guard members and problems caused by the territorial concessions made to the Soviet Union, and during World War II he was given command of the Bucuresti HQ. On 20 June 1944, he was promoted to Field Marshal, but with Ion Mihail Racovita he planned to overthrow Ion Antonescu's regime and save Romania from defeat. He led the transition from the Axis Powers to Comintern, but after the war he took part in the anti-communist resistance movement. Aldea died in 1949 in prison.
