Aulus Didius Gallus (9-61) was the Governor of Roman Britain from 52 to 57 AD, succeeding Publius Ostorius Scapula and preceding Quintus Veranius.
Biography[]
Aulus Didius Gallus was born in the Roman Empire in 9 AD, and he served as Quaestor under the Roman emperor Tiberius in 19 AD. He served as a legate of the proconsul of Asia, as prefect of cavalry, and as proconsul of Sicily, and he later served as consul in 39 AD. In 52 AD, he was appointed governor of Roman Britain, and, despite his predecessor Publius Ostorius Scapula's defeat of Caratacus' Brythonic rebellion, the Silures continued to resist the Roman conquest of Britain during Gallus' governorship. Gallus helped Cartimandua put down her ex-husband Venutius' uprising, and he focused on consolidating Roman rule in Britannia rather than expanding Roman Britain's borders. In 57 AD, he was replaced by Quintus Veranius, and he died in 61 AD.
