Augustus Seymour Porter

Augustus Seymour Porter (18 January 1798 – 18 September 1872) was a US Senator from Michigan (W) from 20 January 1840 to 4 March 1845, succeeding Lucius Lyon and preceding Lewis Cass.

Biography[]

Augustus Seymour Porter was born in Canandaigua, New York in 1798, the nephew of Secretary of War Peter Buell Porter. He became a lawyer in Detroit, Michigan in 1818, and he served as Detroit recorder in 1830 and as Mayor from 1838 to 1839. In 1840, he was appointed to fill a vacancy in the US Senate, serving as a Whig until 1845. He died in Niagara Falls, New York in 1872.
