
Augustus Emmet Maxwell (21 September 1820-5 May 1903) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-FL AL) from 4 March 1853 to 3 March 1857, succeeding Edward C. Cabell and preceding George Sydney Hawkins. Born in Elberton, Georgia, he practiced law in Eutaw, Alabama and Tallahassee, Florida before serving as Florida's Attorney General from 1846 to 1847, in the state house from 1847 to 1848, as Secretary of State of Florida from 1884 to 1849, in the state senate from 1849 to 1850, in Congress, as a Confederate senator from 1862 to 1865, as a circuit court judge from 1877 to 1885, and on the state supreme court from 1865 to 1866 and from 1887 to 1891.
