Biography[]

Augustus Bradford was born in Bel Air, Maryland in 1806, and he practiced law in Baltimore before serving as the Whig Clerk of the Baltimore County Court from 1845 to 1851, joining the Know Nothings from 1854 to 1861 and serving as the Unionist Governor of Maryland from 1862 to 1866, during the American Civil War. While he supported the Union cause, he criticized the federal government's intervention in Maryland's elections.
