Augustin Malar (18 July 1894-1945) was a general of the First Slovak Republic during the Slovak National Uprising in World War II.
Biography[]
Augustin Malar was born on 18 July 1894 in Reitern, Austria. Malar was one of the few Slovaks to rise to a high rank in the Czechoslovak Army, and he was one of the highest-ranking officers in the Slovak Army once the First Slovak Republic was created by Nazi Germany in 1939 before World War II. Malar led his unit in the Great Patriotic War against the Soviet Union and was given two divisions to defend against the Red Army, and in 1944 he refused to join the Slovak National Uprising. However, he said, "Our time has not come yet," which the Germans interpreted as meaning that he would lead a later uprising against their government. Malar was sent to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, where he died in 1945.
