Augusta Barclay

Augusta Barclay (died 1865) was an American farmer who lived in Centreville, Fairfax County, Virginia during the mid-19th century. By 1861, she had given birth to a stillborn child and lost her husband to illness, and she lived with two Black freedmen whom her husband had freed and made partners in the farm. During the American Civil War, she smuggled medical supplies to the Confederacy, and, in July 1861, she first met Confederate cavalryman Charles Main when he rescued her farm from Union Army raiders. They occasionally liaised throughout the war and developed a relationship. Barclay died in childbirth with Main's child in 1865.
