August I of Saxony

August I of Saxony (12 May 1670-1 February 1733) was the Duke of Saxony from 1694 until his death in 1733. He was a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece and was an ally of the Habsburgs, and the Prussians took over his country during the First Polish War.

Biography[]

August was a member of the House of Wettin, and succeeded his brother Johan Georg IV of Saxony upon his death of smallpox in 1694. He became a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece, and allied with the Austrian Empire, but was defeated many times by Sweden and Prussia. In 1706, at the Battle of Fraustadt, he was defeated by Sweden and forced to surrender. He ruled Saxony until his death in 1733.
