The Augsburg Soviet was a short-lived German socialist republic that existed in Augsburg, Bavaria from 3 to 28 October 1919 during the German Revolution. The republic was proclaimed after the Communist Party of Germany rose up against the Weimar Republic, and Adelbert Behncke served as its first (and only) chairman. The republic, supported by just 3,000 Red Guards, was crushed on 28 October 1919 when Hermann Groener's 16,979-strong Reichswehr army defeated the Red Guards.
