Attilio Bandiera

Attilio Bandiera (24 May 1810-25 July 1844) was an Italian patriot who, along with his younger brother Emilio Bandiera, led a failed republican insurrection in Calabria in 1844.

Biography[]

Attilio Bandiera was born in Venice, Venetia, Italy in 1810, the son of an Austrian admiral. He and his brother Emilio Bandiera both followed their father in pursuing naval careers, and they founded the secretive Esperia society as a republican movement affiliated with Giuseppe Mazzini's nationalist movement. After a failed uprising in southern Italy, the brothers fled to Corfu in Greece, and they deserted the Austrian navy. In 1844, upon hearing of a rebellion in Bologna, they travelled to Calabria and attempted to stir up an uprising against Bourbon rule. However, they were arrested by the police before they could carry out their revolt, and they were executed by firing squad on 25 July 1844.
