The Atrebates were a Gallic tribe which resided around Artois in northern France. In 57 BC, the Atrebates contributed 15,000 warriors to the Belgae for fighting off Julius Caesar's army during the Gallic Wars, but Caesar defeated them at the Battle of the Sabis and installed Commius as the new king. Commius helped Caesar with his invasion of Britain, but he later took part in an uprising against Caesar in 52 BC. Further confrontations after the Siege of Alesia forced Commius to flee to Britain, where he founded another kingdom which was conquered by the Roman Empire in the early 40s AD.
