The Atlantic covers 20% of the world population with an area of 106,400,000 square miles, and 29% of its water. The ocean was named for the Greek god Atlas, and its borders are typically defined as the Gulf of Mexico and the coast of the Americas to the west, the coast of Europe and Africa to the east, Scandinavia and Labrador to the north, and the southern tips of South America and Africa to the south.
