Atiyah Abd al-Rahman

Atiyah Abd al-Rahman (1970-22 August 2011), born Jamal Ibrahim Ashtiwi al Misrati, was a Libyan Al-Qaeda affiliate who was in charge of military tactics under Ayman al-Zawahiri. He was killed by a CIA drone strike in Pakistan.

Biography[]

Jamal Ibrahim Ashtiwi al Misrati was born in Libya around 1970, and joined the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, meeting the future Islamic leader Osama bin Laden while still in his teens. Later, he joined Ansar al-Sunnah and Al-Qaeda, and fought alongside Osama in the Soviet-Afghan War in the 1980s. He became the man in charge of military tactics under Al-Qaeda mastermind Ayman al-Zawahiri in 1988 when Al-Qaeda was founded, and was a top leader. Based in Iran, he was also the Al-Qaeda representative to other terrorist groups.

Death[]

In 2011, after the death of Bin Laden, the CIA targeted Abd al-Rahman and killed him in a drone strike.
