Atherton Wheelock Clark (6 April 1826 – 13 April 1882) was a Lieutenant-Colonel of the US Army during the American Civil War.

Biography[]

Atherton Wheelock Clark was born in Waldoboro, Lincoln County, Maine on 6 April 1826, and he served in the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the US Army during the American Civil War after serving as a colonel in the prewar state militia. Clark was commissioned captain and commander of Company E, and he was one of the 20th Maine's commanders at the Battle of Gettysburg on 2 July 1863, holding Little Round Top. In September 1864, he led the regiment at Peebles Farm in Virginia while his superior officers were away from the unit, and he was promoted to Major in March 1865 and brevetted Lieutenant-Colonel in the Volunteers for his services. Clark died in Waldoboro on 13 April 1882.
