Atanasio Aguirre

Atanasio de la Cruz Aguirre (2 June 1801-28 September 1875) was President of Uruguay from 1 March 1864 to 15 February 1865, succeeding Bernardo Berro and preceding Tomas Villalba. He was a National Party of Uruguay member.

Biography[]

Atanasio de la Cruz Aguirre Aguado was born in Montevideo, Uruguay on 2 June 1801, and he fought in the Cisplatine War before serving as War Commissioner from 1833 to 1838. He went on to become a Senator in 1861, and he was elected President in 1864, succeeding the Colorado Party of Uruguay leader Bernardo Berro. He fought against Venancio Flores' rebellious Colorados during the Uruguayan Civil War, and, in 1864, he was deposed by a Brazilian invasion during the Uruguayan War. He died in 1875.
