Atanasia Galgano (1992-) was an Italian Brothers of Italy politician who served as Prime Minister of Italy from 24 April 2023.

Biography[]

Atanasia Galgano was born in Viterbo, Lazio, Italy in 1992. She worked as a journalist before entering politics with the neo-fascist Brothers of Italy party, rising to be its leader by 2023 due to her youthful charisma and commanding personality. That year, her party placed in first in the general election, winning 19.77% of the vote and 11/54 Chamber of Deputies seats; this was followed by the Five Star Movement with 18.47% and 10/54 seats, the Democratic Party with 17.84% and 9/54 seats, Azione with 11.05% and 6/54 seats, Lega with 10.9% and 6/54 seats, Forza Italia with 9.64% and 5/54 seats, the Greens and Left Alliance with 6.9% and 4/54 seats, and Italia Viva with 5.43% and 3/54 seats. Galgano won the support of 25 deputies (from Italia Viva, Azione, Lega, Forza Italia, and her party) to M5S leader Quintino Ricco's 24, becoming prime minister.

Tenure[]

Galgano inherited a €172 million budget with a €7 million increase, while the population of Italy was generally happy with the state of affairs. During Galgano's tenure, the Chamber voted 49-0 for a bus transport service, 45-0 for an organ donation program, 44-1 for an ambulance service, 44-3 for anti-corruption measures, 29-10 to keep the housing tax, 48-1 for an anti-mafia commission, 26-14 against universal basic income, 41-5 for environmental education, 28-21 for anti-money laundering legislation, 43-6 to legalize gambling, 38-6 to legalize prostitution, 36-13 for mandatory vaccinations, 40-6 for food control, 38-14 to lower the number of Chamber seats from 54 to 48, 18-17 for bank secrecy, 45-4 for a national football league, 31-7 for a pollution tax, and 29-22 against making Italy a tax haven.

On 29 April 2024, new elections were held. M5S won 24.57% of the vote and 12/48 seats, followed by FdI with 21.11% and 10/48 seats, the Democratic Party with 16.15% and 84/8 seats, Lega with 9.95% and 5/48 seats, Forza Italia with 9.1% and 4/48 seats, Azione with 8.98% and 4/48 seats, Italia Viva with 5.21% and 3/48 seats, and the Left and Greens with 4.94% and 2/48 seats. Galgano won re-election with the support of her usual coalition and several rogue M5S deputies, winning 26 votes to Ricco's 19.
