Atago

The Atago was an Imperial Japanese Navy heavy cruiser that was launched on 16 June 1930 and commissioned on 30 March 1932. The ship was sister ships with the TakaoMaya, and the Chokai, and she was named after a mountain, just like her sister ships. The ship was laid down at the Kure Naval Arsenal and was assigned to the Yokosuka Naval District, and she was captained by Matsuji Ijuin at the time of the Attack on Pearl Harbor. The ship notably took part in the Solomon Islands campaign, and she was damaged at the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in November 1942. Admiral Takeo Kurita was later given command of the Atago, serving as his flagship during the Philippines campaign of 1944. The ship was sunk by four US Navy submarine torpedoes at the Battle of Leyte Gulf on 22 October 1944, with Kurita and 529 sailors being rescued and 360 being killed.
