Khan's death
Shamsuddin Muhammad Atgah Khan was the son of Afghan farmer Mir Yar Muhammad of Ghazni, and he served in the Mughal army of Babur's son Kamran Mirza before saving Humayun from drowning in the Ganges and becoming one of his personal servants. He received the title of khan from Humayun, and his son Mirza Aziz Koka became Akbar's foster brother.
Ataga Khan accompanied Akbar to Kabul in 1545, and, in 1560, he was entrusted with suppressing regent Bairam Khan's rebellion, defeating his army at Gunecur (near Jalandhar, Punjab) and forcing Bairam to surrender and go into exile in Mecca, where he was assassinated by a group of Afghans. Ataga replaced Munim Khan as prime minister in 1561, but his knowledge of Adham Khan's misconduct during his military campaigns made him a liability to the ambitious courtier, whose mother Maham Anga resulted Ataga having more influence at court than her. On 16 May 1562, Adham Khan murdered Ataga in the hall of audience at Agra Fort, causing Akbar to have Adham executed by defenestration.
