The Astures were a Celtic tribe which inhabited northwest Hispania in what is now Asturias. They were a horse-riding highland cattle-raising people who lived in circular huts of stone drywall, and they were also vigorous hunter-gatherers. During the Punic Wars, they fought in Hannibal's Carthaginian army, and, from 29 to 19 BC, the Roman Republic subdued the Astures, Cantabri, and other Celtic tribes in northern Spain. The Astures staged a revolt in 54 AD, but the situation was calmed by 68 AD. The Astures lent their name to Asturias.
