Assi al-Qawali

Assi al-Qawali was an Iraqi-Kurdish insurgent who commanded the White Flags during the Iraqi insurgency.

Biography[]

Assi al-Qawali was born in Tuz Khurmatu, Saladin Governorate, Iraq to a Kurdish family. He was a supporter of Ansar al-Islam before joining the Kurdistan Democratic Party, serving in the Peshmerga during the Iraqi Civil War and burning down the houses of Shia Iraqi Turkmen in the Tuz Khurmatu area in 2015 and 2016. In 2017, he took part in attacks against the Popular Mobilization Forces before founding the White Flags in December 2017. The White Flags were formed to retaliate against the Shia militias in Iraqi Kurdistan, and they incorporated Ansar al-Islam's remnants.
