The assassination of Ismail Haniyeh occurred on 31 July 2024 when Israel remotely detonated an explosive hidden within the Sa'dabad Complex in Tehran, Iran, killing Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh.
Haniyeh, who had been living abroad in Qatar since leaving the Gaza Strip in 2019, visited Tehran in July 2024 to attend the inauguration of President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian, after which he was slated to travel to Turkey to speak to the Grand National Assembly about the Palestinian cause. Haniyeh had been marked for death by Israel since the al-Aqsa Flood terror offensive in October 2023, and Mossad agents planted a bomb within the heavily-guarded Sa'adabad Complex two months before Haniyeh's visit.
On the morning of 31 July 2024, Israel remotely detonated the explosive device hidden in Haniyeh's room, killing him and his bodyguard Wassim Abu Shaaban. Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader Ziyad al-Nakhalah was staying in the same building, but was not a target. In response to the Israeli attack, Supreme Leader of Iran Ali Khamenei ordered direct strikes on Israel.
