Assam is a state in northeastern India, with Dispur serving as its capital. The region, known for its tea and silk, is considered to be more closely a part of Southeast Asia than a part of the Indian Subcontinent, and it was ruled as a separate province from East Bengal from 1912 to 1947 under the British Raj. Assam was partitioned into numerous smaller states, including Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Mizoram under Indian rule during the 1960s, leaving Assam with a majority-Hindu population (61.47%) with significant Muslim (34.22%) and Christian (3.7%) minorities. In 2011, Assam had a population of 31,205,576 people.
