Aso Korenori (阿蘇コレノリ, 1461 - 1516) was the daimyō of the Aso Clan from 1477 to 1516. Father to Aso Koretoyo and Aso Korenaga (sometimes known as Aso Taketsune), Korenori was reputed to be a stern figure, ruling his domain with a monk-like stoicism. Although he himself never became a monk, he placed his second son, Koretoyo as Daiguji (High Priest) of Aso-Kuju Temple.
During this time the Aso Clan was split due to the machinations of the Imperial Courts during the Nanboku-Cho Period. Under his father, Koretada he warred against his adopted brother Koretoshi. Eventually, Korenori would emerge victorious over his brother at the battle of Makunohira and reunite the clan in 1484.
A long time ally of the Kikuchi Clan, Korenori planned to marry his first-born, Korenaga, to the daughter of Kikuchi Shigetomo. However, both belligerents died before the marriage took place. Korenaga would die in 1513, just months after the birth of Kikuchi Konomi, his intended, and Korenori was forced to make Koretoyo his heir. Shigetomo had died in late 1512 of natural causes. Meanwhile, Korenori would die in 1516 after a fall from a horse. According to legend, he was riding out in the forests around Mt. Aso when a tsuchigomo (土蜘蛛, literally "dirt" or "earth spider") emerged from a crack in a nearby cliff and spooked his mount before disappearing. Other theories suggest that his son, Koretoyo, jealously seeking the position of daimyō, had ambushed his father with whistling arrows (Kabura-ya) and caused his horse to bolt, throwing Korenori to the ground.
