George Ashley Wilkes was a Major in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War.
Biography[]
George Ashley Wilkes was born on the Twelve Oaks plantation in Clayton County, Georgia, the son of John Wilkes and the brother of India and Honey. Wilkes was raised to be a gentleman, and he loved the southern belle Scarlett O'Hara, although he ultimately married his distant cousin Melanie Hamilton. At the start of the American Civil War in 1861, Wilkes joined the Confederate States Army out of love for the peace and beauty of the Old South, and the war destroyed Wilkes' dreams, as he no longer had a plantation to return to, and the Old South ended. Wilkes initially sought to move to the North with his wife to stand on his own as a man, but his wife refused, and the family ultimately moved to Atlanta. There, Melanie died in childbirth, widowing Ashley.
