
Ash in 1979
Ash (8 August 1960 - 21 June 1979) was a member of The Warriors street gang based in Coney Island, New York City. He was killed in June 1979 by The Destroyers gang leader Virgil, who was later burned alive by Cleon to avenge Ash's murder.
Biography[]
Ash was born in Brooklyn, New York City in August 1960 to a poor African-American family. He grew up on the streets with close friend Rembrandt, who later became a new recruit of the Warriors in April 1979 with Ash. As one of the gang's youngest members, Ash was well-liked by senior Warriors members including Cleon and Vermin.
Later that June, the Destroyers (a rival gang from east Coney Island) entered the Warriors' home turf and began harassing store owners for protection. During the turf war, Cleon instructed Ash to protect the fish market. When Cleon and Vermin arrived moments later Ash was found beaten to death inside Tony's fish market, the Destroyers ambushed the pair as they attempted to leave the building.
Soon after Cleon and Vermin evaded the Destroyers, they vowed vengeance against their leader Virgil who was later burned alive in a warehouse by the two men.
