Ascall mac Ragnaill (1124-16 May 1171) was King of Dublin from 1160 to 1170, succeeding Brodar mac Torcaill.
Biography[]
Ascall mac Ragnaill was born in 1124, the son of Ragnall mac Torcaill and the nephew of Brodar mac Torcaill. Following his uncle's death in 1160, Ascall succeeded to the throne of Dyflin, and he had to deal with threats from his kinsmen, from Sudreyjar, and from the Irish kingdoms. In 1166, he helped in the overthrew of the King of Leinster, Dermot MacMurrough, but, in 1170, MacMurrough returned amid the Norman invasion of Ireland. The Normans took Dublin and drove Ascall and the Dubliner elite out of the city, forcing them to flee to Orkney. In 1171, Ascall returned to Dublin with a fleet, attempting to recapture the city; however, he was defeated, captured, and executed by the English shortly after.
