Asakura Masakuni

Asakura Masakuni (born 1821) was a Japanese soldier in the service of the pro-Imperial Choshu Domain during the Boshin War of the 1860s. Trained in a Western-style cadet academy, Masakuni both accepted Westernization and remained a skilled swordsman in the samurai style. During the January 1867 Battle of Okazaki, Masakuni was credited with seven kills with his katana as he and the rest of the Choshu army stormed Okazaki Castle and overwhelmed its pro-Shogunate garrison.
