Asael Bielski

Asael Bielski (1908-1945) was a leader of the Bielski Otriad during World War II.

Biography[]

Asael Bielski was born in 1908 in Stankiewicz, Congress Poland, the younger brother of Tuvia Bielski and Zus Bielski. Bielski belonged to the only Jewish family in the town, and he was one of twelve children. He joined the Bielski Otriad alongside his brothers in 1941, and he helped in rescuing Jews from ghettoes and hiding in the Lipczynska Forest with the refugees. He also took part in the guerrilla warfare against Nazi Germany, training both men and women how to use weapons. In 1944, upon the liberation of the Soviet Union from the Axis Powers, Bielski volunteered to join the Red Army, and he was killed in action at the Battle of Koenigsberg, leaving behind his wife Chaya and their children.
