Biography[]

Asa Smith Bushnell was born in Rome, New York in 1834, and he moved to Springfield, Ohio at age 17 and served in the 152nd Ohio Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War. He went on to serve as a Republican presidential elector in 1884, as a business executive, and as Governor of Ohio from 1896 to 1900. Bushnell took an early leadership role in trust-busting to prohibit price fixing and production limitation, which hurt consumers and drove up the prices for products. He died of apoplexy after attending Governor Myron T. Herrick's inauguration in 1904.
