As-Salih

As-Salih ad-Din (1163-1181) was the Emir of Damascus in 1174, succeeding Zengi and preceding Saladin.

Biography[]

As-Salih was the first son of Nur ad-Din and his wife Islah ad-Din, and he was groomed as the successor of his father to the Zengids. Salih was the governor of al-Raqqah in Syria under his father, and when he died in 1174, the dynasty fell into chaos as Nur ad-Din's former generals began to fight amongst each other. That same year, the Ayyubid Empire of Egypt invaded the Zengids' lands, with Saladin taking Banyas and Damascus in 1174 and becoming as-Salih's regent. In 1176 Saladin became the ruler of Syria, and as-Salih died in 1181.
