Biography[]

Arthur Hendrick Vandenburg was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1884, and he worked as a newspaper editor and publisher before entering politics as a Republican. He was appointed to the US Senate in 1928, and he supported the early New Deal programs, while opposing President Franklin D. Roosevelt's domestic policies. He also opposed America's entry into World War II, only to abandon his isolationism after the Attack on Pearl Harbor, arguing that "politics stop at the water's edge."
