Artaphernes II

Artaphernes II was the Persian satrap of Lydia from 492 BC to after 480 BC.

Biography[]

Artaphernes was the son of Artaphernes and the nephew of Darius the Great, and his uncle appointed him and Datis to command the expedition sent to punish Athens and Eretria for their support of the Ionian Revolt. In 490 BC, they destroyed Eretria, but they were defeated by the Athenians at the Battle of Marathon. Ten years later, Artaphernes commanded the Lydians and Mysians during his cousin Xerxes I's second invasion of Greece, during which they were defeated at the Battle of Salamis.
