Arrigo di Montforte

Arrigo di Montforte (died 1282) was a Sicilian nobleman who lived in Palermo during the 13th century. He was the illegitimate son of the Angevin-appointed Governor of Sicily, Guido di Montforte, with whom he had an uneasy relationship; he rejected his father's offer of service in a French office and also rejected his invitation to a ball held by the French occupiers. Arrigo fell in love with the local noblewoman Elena di Palermo and befriended the rebel leader John of Procida, but he later betrayed both of their wishes by preventing them from killing his father. He later secured Elena's forgiveness by revealing that Guido was his father, and Guido later gave his blessing for Arrigo to marry Elena. At their wedding, Procida led a Sicilian mob to massacre the Montfortes and the French garrison of Palermo, wiping out the French and their collaborators in Palermo.
