Army of the Ohio

The Army of the Ohio was a Union army that was active from 1861 to 1862 and from 1863 to 1865 during the American Civil War. Under Don Carlos Buell, the army assisted Ulysses S. Grant's Army of the Tennessee in defeating the Confederacy at Shiloh on 6-7 April 1862, but the army was disbanded after suffering heavy losses at Perryville in October. On 25 March 1863, Ambrose Burnside recreated the army, and John M. Schofield took over in February 1864 after Burnside was relieved due to illness in December 1863. The army destroyed the Army of Tennessee at the Battle of Franklin and the Battle of Nashville from November to December 1864, and the army pushed into North Carolina in March 1865. The army was disbanded after the war's end.
