Army Group South was the name of several German army groups during World War II. In 1939, Army Group South was formed with the purpose of taking part in the invasion of Poland from Slovakia, with Gerd von Rundstedt leading the army group. The army group also took part in the 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union, Operation Barbarossa, and the army group's goal was to capture Ukraine. In 1942, the army group was divided into Army Group Don and Army Group B with the goal of advancing towards the Caucasus in southern Russia. In February 1943, the army groups were reunited once more, and the army group was renamed Army Group North Ukraine on 4 April 1944. In September 1944, Army Group South Ukraine was renamed to Army Group South, the last incarnation of the group. Army Group South was renamed Army Group Ostmark on 2 April 1945, and it would end the war in Austria.
