Army Group North was a German army group that was created on 2 September 1939 at the start of World War II. Army Group North was commanded by Fedor von Bock for the invasion of Poland, and Wilhelm Ritter von Leeb led the army group during Operation Barbarossa in 1941. In 1942, Georg von Kuechler took command of the army group, which would begin the Siege of Leningrad. After the siege was lifted, the army group retreated into the Baltics, and Walter Model, Georg Lindemann, Johannes Friessner, and Ferdinand Schoerner all had their turns leading the group in 1944. Lothar Rendulic would take command in 1945, and Walter Weiss was its last commander. The old Army Group North was renamed "Army Group Courland", while Army Group Center (trapped in Koenigsberg) was redesignated "Army Group North". It surrendered on 9 April 1945 after the fall of Koenigsberg to the Red Army.
