German army group

Army Group Courland was an army group of the German Wehrmacht that was active from 15 January to 8 May 1945 during World War II. The army group was created from remnants of Army Group North, which was isolated in Courland by the Soviet Red Army during its westward offensives of late 1944 to early 1945. Consisting of the German 16th Army and the German 18th Army (some 200,000 troops in 26 divisions), the army group was trapped in the Courland Pocket until the war's end. On 8 May 1945, Carl Hilpert surrendered the army group to the Soviets.
