Biography[]
Armistead Thomson Mason was born in Louisa County, Virginia, the son of US Senator Stevens Thomson Mason. He served as a volunteer colonel during the War of 1812, rising to the rank of Brigadier-General in the militia. In 1816, the 28-year-old Mason was appointed to finish William Branch Giles' US Senate term despite being underage, making him the second-youngest senator. He left office in 1817, and his campaign for the US Congress that year led to him making several enemies. He was killed in a duel with his second cousin in 1819.
