The Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic was one of the constituent republics of the Soviet Union, existing from 1920 to 1922 and from 1936 to 1991. The Armenian SSR was an important industrial center of the USSR due to the influx of Armenian Genocide refugees into Armenia, with the population growing from 880,000 in 1926 to 3,300,000 by 1989. On 23 August 1990, Armenia proclaimed the "Republic of Armenia" to be an independent state, and it seceded from the USSR on 21 September 1991.
